rollin'
well i'm so excited that i'm going to give the big news first.
i ran FIVE MILES on the treadmill at the gym. yup. 5 whole miles. to some of you that is probably not so big of a deal, but i haven't run that far in, oh, years, so i'm pretty psyched. you might even say that i am stoked.
so. how about that.
anyway.
today is october 3.
weight is goal + 18
still moving in the right direction!
what i ate:
breakfast: go lean crunch with skim milk (245), coffee with skim & splenda (30)
lunch: palak paneer (240), spinach & tomato salad (60), cherry zero coke (0)
snack: nectarine (60)
other snack: apple (60) and string cheese (70)
dinner: a luna bar (180)
so, not quite enough calories today. but i didn't get home until after 8, and at that point i didn't really feel like eating a whole lot. yes, it is me that just said that. i just said the words, i didn't really feel like eating a whole lot. which is quite possibly the first time i have EVER said those words.
one thing that boggles my mind. is when people get a cookie or a brownie or something, and only eat part of it. they throw the other part away!! or give it to someone else!! i ask myself, how can they do this? how can they have deliciousness right there in front of them and not be compelled to finish it? why do i not have this ability? should we get into the psychology of this all? i think not. i think maybe i just need to convince myself that this particular cookie (hypothetical cookie, of course) is not the last cookie i will ever see. therefore, if i don't finish it, i am not wasting the LAST COOKIE EVER and i am not a bad person.
at target tonight i bought a new package of string cheese. new brand. usually i buy kraft 2% but they didn't have it, so i bought the cheese head kind. or something like that. i'm skeptical. i'll keep you posted.
the other thing i bought was two new boxes of crystal light single serve drink mix packets. in two new flavors. cherry pomegranate (how delicious is that?) and wild strawberry. make that, wild strawberry with caffeine. which should be an adventure.
the other other thing i bought was a new case of cherry zero coke. i know some of you out there are newly and vehemently anti-soda, but me, i dig that stuff.
i also bought gum. a lot of gum. like, creepy-girl-who-lives-in-her-parents'-basement a lot. but hey, it kills the cravings.
cheers!

today
since this blog is called 'today, and what i ate' i thought it might be nice to actually post about today, and what i ate. since it is 8:05pm after all, and i no longer eat after 8pm. so i will be able to tell you acurately what i ate. and all.
anyway.
today is october 2
weight is goal + 18.5
what i ate:
breakfast: go lean crunch with skim milk (245), coffee with skim & splenda (30)
snack: coffee with creamer & splenda (30)
lunch: palak paneer (240), spinach & tomato salad (60), cherry zero coke (0)
snack: nectarine (60)
other snack: apple (60) and string cheese (70)
other other snack: half a bottle of gatorade (60)
dinner: mahi mahi (100), chickpea & tomato salad (100), slice of toast (90), glass of wine (120)
dessert: small chocolate chip cookie bar (100) and a few grapes (50)
exercise:
15 mile bike ride with my buddies after work
so. feeling good about the scale moving back down. the weekend was unfortunate- even though i worked out a bit (a couple times on the hotel treadmill, one short run outside, one LONG walk around the mall of america), it was pretty much a bust. i eat SO much better when i am home.
for those of you who have expressed curiosity- palak paneer is an indian dish, basically sauteed spinach and cheese cubes. plus or minus some rice and red beans. i eat the frozen dinner kind. the 'amy's' brand has rice and red beans and 270 calories. the 'ethnic gourmet' has rice and 240 calories. and i have to say- i love that stuff. man. i LOVE it. iloveitiloveitiloveit. that and a cherry zero coke and i am in heaven. people at work make fun of me because i eat the same thing every day. but once you taste it you will understand why!
so the other thing is that i was up in the kitchen talking to my mom about yoga, and started doing a couple poses, and realized, i love that too. i miss it! i used to take a yoga class a couple of days a week back in the lou, and haven't done it since. i need to check out what my options are.
the other other thing is that i love cycling. today's ride was so awesome- i am not trying to sound like a brat but i am a great cyclist- it is totally my sport. i've got these long strong legs, and some days i feel like i could just ride forever. i was thinking today that i should do more than just this recreational riding- i think i want to really train. not sure what for... maybe we build to that. so how do you find a trainer? better yet, how do you find a FREE trainer?
and... i think that's it for today.
anyway.

miss me?
sorry for my absence. the weekend, as suspected, was rather a disaster.
here we go again.
yesterday was october 1.
weight was goal + 20
what i ate:
breakfast: go lean crunch with skim milk (245), coffee with skim and splenda (30)
lunch: palak paneer (270), spinach & tomato salad (60), cherry zero coke (0)
snack: nectarine (60)
other snack: apple (60) and string cheese (70)
dinner: salad made of romaine lettuce, tomatoes, black beans and low fat ricotta cheese (200)
dessert: 1 chocolate chip cookie bar (100?)
exercise:
2 mile run, 1 mile walk on the treadmill at the gym
so. pretty good day after a pretty not good weekend.
something my boss said the other day is sticking with me. he said it about work, but i think it applies to this arena as well. 'excellence comes from diligence.' or something like that. ok maybe the exact words aren't sticking with me, but the idea is. that you have to work hard to achieve great things. but also, that if you work hard, you will achieve great things.
here we go again.

ach
well we knew it would happen. at least, i did. on the road, and it all goes to hell.
anyway.
yesterday was september 26th.
weight was goal + 18.5
good, right?
ok. not for long.
what i ate:
breakfast:
go lean crunch with skim milk (245), coffee with skim & splenda (30)
coffee on the plane (45), kashi bar (140)
lunch: shrimp & broccoli from tgi friday's (300), a beer (180)
dinner: bread & butter, garlic toast with spinach artichoke dip, roasted veggie flatbread, diet coke (don't even want to try to calculate the caloric content)
because you need three kinds of bread at one meal.
i'm so disappointed.
and then blew it again today. you'll get to read that tomorrow, i guess.
oh and did i mention? no exercise whatsoever.
anyway.

on the road again
well, today i am on the road. i wasn't yesterday.
yesterday was september 25th.
weight was goal + 18.5
what i ate:
breakfast: kashi go lean crunch with skim milk (245), coffee with splenda & skim milk (30)
snack: more coffee, splenda & a creamer (40)
lunch: mattar paneer (320), cherry zero coke (0)
snack: apple (60), string cheese (70), then coffee with sugar and milk (75)
dinner: scallops (150), small baked potato (120), green beans (50), small glass of red wine (100)
dessert: chocolate chip cookie bar (100)
exercise : none whatsoever.
well the eating part is going ok, i have been rocking the house as far as avoiding the junk etc. (case in point: went to a funeral today where they served BANANA SPLITS at the reception, and all i had was coffee.) but it is hard to fit in a workout between work and other duties. well, i did mow the lawn, which required mild exertion, but it only took about 20 minutes.
hmm.
anyway it is encouraging to see the scale moving. fer sure.

yesterday
it's hard to figure out what to call these posts. since it's pretty much the same post every day.
anyway.
yesterday was september 24th.
weight was goal + 19.5
moving in the right directions!
what i ate:
breakfast: kashi go lean crunch with skim milk (245), coffee with splenda and skim milk (30)
lunch: palak paneer (270) cherry zero coke (0)
snack: luna bar (190)
dinner: TONS of raw veggies, 4 little bruscettas, and 3 little crab cakes. one chocolate chip cookie bar for dessert.
so i had big success at the meeting and dinner tonight- ate only my own food (politely refusing the BOWLS OF CHOCOLATE that were on every table) at lunch and at the happy hour dinner thing, had only water to drink, and took it very easy on the snacks.
exercise:
none whatsoever. i guess i should have gotten up early and gone to the gym before work. didn't get home until after 8, and i'm a slug at night. :o(

good beginning
yesterday was september 23.
weight was goal + 20
what i ate:
breakfast: special k cereal with skim milk (155), coffee with skim milk and splenda (30)
snack: string cheese (70), corn tortilla (40)
lunch: veggie lasagna (400?)
dinner: slice of toast (90), bbq soy protein (210) (MUCH tastier than it sounds!)
snack: apple (60), 12 almonds (80)
exercise: 3 mile walk with mom
also mom made a big pan of chocolate chip cookie bars, and i decided not to have any. how about that.
so a couple of you have mentioned that you think 1200 calories is on the low side, which i think is probably right. i calculated my bmr (that is, basal metabolic rate) a few months back and i actually should be eating around 1400 to support my goal weight. so i'll aim for around that. i will start counting the calories of what i am eating, as a reference. i don't want to get super control-freaky about counting calories, but on the other hand, that is the simplest formula... as amyz pointed out, it takes a deficit of 3500 calories to lose one pound of fat. so that means cutting or burning that many calories... 500 a day to lose a pound a week. 1000 a day to lose 2 pounds! eesh, that sounds like a lot. but if i eat 500 less and do my hour of exercise, it's reasonable.
this week is going to be tough as far as exercising and eating well... help me out. we have meetings all day today and tomorrow including evening outings for dinner/drinks. then wednesday - saturday i am traveling, which makes both eating and exercising so much harder. here's what i've done so far to prepare: brought my lunch today despite the fact that lunch is provided. i'll do the same tomorrow. tonight at dinner: no alcohol (which will make everyone ask if i am pregnant- so annoying), and i'll try to stick with a smart dinner, maybe skip the appetizers altogether? i brought my workout clothes in the hope that we'll get done tonight early enough for me to swing by the gym on the way home, but that will be unpleasant at best after a long day and dinner out... we'll see. as far as being on the road- i'll bring exercise clothes and hopefully there is a gym at my hotel? i am not super crazy about going running in an unfamiliar town.
other ideas?
